1871 CENSUS Request, LONDON, JAMES
« on: Wednesday 18 February 04 00:07 GMT (UK) »
I need to find William JAMES, aged 5, son of Edwin JAMES.  The only info I have is "LONDON".

Thanks in anticipation.

William JAMES (age 5) not in my London index as yet. Quite possible he could be under KENT/MIDDX/SURREY too. (what with later boundary changes).

Hi there Pauline

Depending on which side of the census date William was born on, he is mostly likely to be 5 years old, but he could be 4 or 6.

Have just checked the 1871 census on line (Middlesex) and there were 3 William James aged 5 – but only one of the 3 was born Middlesex but his father was also named William, not Edwin – the other 2 came from Worcestershire and did not have Edwin as a father.

There are 6 Wiiliams aged 4 years, – but again, only 1 is from Middlesex, South Mimms to be precise and his father is not Edwin; the others are from Worcester and Staffordshire.

There are 9 Williams aged 6 years – 3 of whom have a birth place as Middlesex but alas - none with a father Edwin.
The other 6 came mostly from Worcestershire and Shropshire

1871 for Kent and Surrey are not on line yet, and I do not have the cd transcripts to look at

Hi Pauline
1871 London census shows:
JAMES, Edwin, 48, Wid., Brushmaker, b Hants, Portsmouth
Edward, 7, scholar, born M'sex, Pimlico
            William R. J., 6           "        "        "
            Walter Charles, 4      "        "        "
Found in Kensington, London
RG10/43, ED34, Folio 83, Page 35.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

BTW, I am also searching JAMES, different line, but I found them on this census, and am thrilled to bits.
Regards,

Thanks, Grub.  I'm not sure if this is my William James but it's the best lead that I have.  I'll follow it up.

Hi Pauline
I checked all the 5 year olds, none with father Edwin.
Then I went to the 6 year olds, he was the only one showing with Edwin.
BUT there were about 39 Edwins on the census.
If you know Edwins' birth place, or year, I'd be happy to look again.
Regards
Grub

The only info I have on Edwin James is that he was a bricklayer or mason.
