Slarkes / Starkes COMPLETED-THANKS
« on: Thursday 28 September 06 13:28 BST (UK) »
I have the above 2 possible surname spellings for an Ann(e), her baptism 8 Sept 1611 and marriage to William Longhurst(e) 6 June 1629, both in Abinger.

I know many of you out there have far more experience as to which one is more or most likely to be the correct one. Not being able to access the original pr's or transcriptions, I would be grateful for your opinions.

Hi Dawn,
I checked the Abinger transcripts & there are entries in the name of SLARKES including Ann.  The name is also cross-indexed with SLARKS & SLEARKES.
There is only one entry in the name of STARKS & that's someone by the name of Willmoth  ::)
So it looks like it would be SLARKES.

Hi Jane

Thanks for checking. Member submissions to the IGI are always treated with extreme caution (Starkes) when they don't match the church entries (Slarkes),  but cross referencing the Slarkes name with later census sources didn't prove conclusive. There are very few Slarkes around so I thought I'd double check.

Dawn, if you got that information from member submitted entries on the IGI, do you want me to check her baptism & marriage on the transcripts?

Hi Jane

Her entries are member submitted as Starkes but there are Abinger church transcripts with the same(ish) dates but spelt Slarkes.

Member submitted baptism Ann Starkes about 1608
Member submitted marriage Ann Starkes 6 June 1629 William Longhurst

Church transcript batch P013371 1559-1812 baptism Anne Slarkes 8 Sept 1611 father Edward
Church transcript batch M013371 1559-1812 marriage to William Longhurste

Would the Abinger pr's you have show any more info?  I know the dates and her father from the IGI, just wasn't sure about the spelling  :-\ but am now thanks to your earlier message.

Hope all is well with you.

Dawn

(big post-it note to self - get Abinger pr's sooner rather than later and then you can stop pestering Jane  ;D )

Hi Dawn,
The pr's show exactly the same.  Just it's Ann SLARKES on the marriage which you know about.
Noticed this Longhurste just above on the index;
10/8/1628 - marriage of Walter Longhurste to Agnis Davys, Abinger.
