COMPLETE with thanks - Church religion
« on: Friday 29 September 06 08:59 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

I hope someone can help me.
I remember sometime ago someone telling me that there was something on the marriage certificate which indicated the religion of the church in which the couple married.

Also is there any other way of knowing the religion of a particular church, from a christening record or similar.

You can tell I'm not up on my religious information  :-[

Thanks
Hilary

Hi Hilary,

Some of my marriage certs have "established church" printed on them , some have it written in and on the others are written........Roman Catholics and Particular Baptists. I take established church to mean Church of England. (They are all English certs)

Sadly I don't have any christening records.

Hi Hilary, I'm having a simliar problem at the moment.

Try this site

www.achurchnearyou.com

Or, try and google the name of the church.

Here's one if the family were married in Australia

Good luck  :)

Just because a couple were married in a certain church it does not mean they were of that religion.  At one time a couple were not legally married unless they married in a Church of England Church. I have couple married in the local Church of England Church but the children are baptised into another religion,

Sometimes the marriage certificate will say The Parish Church instead of the name of the church.  This means it is Church of England.

hi Everyone,

Thanks for the info.
Nearly all my marriage certs say 'in the established Church after Banns' or the Prish Church...
So I guess that these are Church of England Churches.

I soppose I will have to do some more research in this area.

Thanks again
