STONES family - Leeds 19th century.
« on: Wednesday 18 February 04 13:22 GMT (UK) »
Looking for information on William David STONES (born c.1840 in Leeds).  He was a mechanic.

Did he marry Esther WESTERMANN or Ann JOHNSON?

Had a son Walter STONES (born c. 1864 in Leeds), who moved to Manchester area and married Emma DAKIN in 1887.

Hi Fitty,

Alas the only indication we have is the word Leeds on later censuses and marriage certificates, and its a big place!

A possibility is Airedale Place, Leeds, because there was a William D Stones (born 1837) on the 1881 census

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1881BR_4733307&HOUSEHOLD_SUB=1&frompage=5

If you could have a look in the 1861 census I would be grateful.
Les.

Hiya Les,

I have the 1868 Poll Book for leeds and looked on there first for your William D Stones and found a William D Stones living at Park Court Leeds.
It's possible he's yours.

3392-76-1
9 Park Court

William D Stones Head 25 Whitesmith (striker)   Leeds
Ann Stones      Wife   22 Woollen Flock Dresser   Leeds
Mary Stones   (unreadable) Widow 64                 Leeds
John William  Son  1                                               Leeds

I dont have a name index for the 1861 Census but the Poll book works quite well in some instances.

Hope this William is yours, the age ties up at least.

Christine

Thanks very much.  This looks quite promising.  Seems to be the same family as on 1881 census

The only thing is, where was the son Walter?!

Sorry, I thought the 1868 poll book was a document drawn up in that year (after Walter's birth).  Les.

The Poll Book is a list of everyone who voted in the election of that year and because it's only 7 years after the 1861 Census it's quite useful as a Name index for the 1861 as it gives addresses too.
