EXIBY, anyone heard of this surname?
« on: Monday 08 November 04 11:10 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone researching the surname Exiby, or has anyone even heard of it?
I found in the Ardleigh PRs the marriage of John Potter to Mary Exiby in 1695, the name Exiby was hard to read so I asked an ERO Archivist to have a look and she thought it was Exiby.  Another researcher had the bright idea to look in Boyds Marriage index and sure enough Boyds had it as Exiby.  I checked in a surname reference book at the ERO and found that Exiby was not listed.  As my time in Essex and the ERO was up I wasn't able to follow up with a search for her baptism.  I cannot yet say for certain that John and Mary are my ancestors but the name Exiby is so unusual it has me really intrigued.  Sooooo does anyone have any thoughts/ideas about it?  ???

I've not heard of the name before but if the name has been mis-transcribed in Essex it may also have been mis-transcribed in Suffolk. The following find was produced by searching the IGI on the LDS site for any Mary Exiby. MARY EXIBY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Marriage: 23 MAR 1653 Hadleigh, Suffolk, England
It may be worth your while searching the IGI for other EXIBY and puting the most common forenames with it.
Maybe the name is usually spelt with an H at the beginning or the x is replaced with cks

Thanks for that Clincher I'll have a look again in the IGI, I looked for Mary yesterday but nothing came up.  I also did an undated blanket search for Exiby and nothing came up, perhaps there was an error in my search details.

I've just had a further thought about Exiby. There was/is? an English cricketer cum commentator named Axelby? If you input that name to LDS site you get quite a few hits....Don't want to lead you up the wrong garden path but you never know...

Axelby seems more likely than Exiby.  Taking into account the different county accents plus varying levels of the scribes literacy you may well have hit the nail on the head.  Thanks for that Clincher, I'll give it a whirl later.  8)

Tried Axelby on the IGI and as you say quite a few hits.  Also tried Exelby and got quite a few hits including some Essex Exelby and Exelbie.  The IGI treats Axelby and Exelby as different names but I wonder if they are the same.
