Have you got any of them in 1881 or subsequent censuses?
Any more dates? like when her mum remarried, or dob of siblings?

No birth in indexes 1870-72 for a Martha Cooper in Chelmsford district (thibk that is what Ingatestone would come under)

Hi binge,

I found this is the 1891 census which looks like it could be the family you're looking for but not all the dates & places of birth tie up with your information:

1891 Census, Essex, Ingatestone & Fryerning (RG12/1384 Folio 110 Page 3)
Address: 21 High Street

William FRANCIS, Head, 35, Carpenter, b. Suffolk, Baxton?
Martha ditto, Wife, 32, b. Essex, Ingatestone
William John ditto, Son, 15, Carpenter, b. Suffolk, Baxton?
Martha Ann COOPER, Step Daughter, 10, Scholar, b. Essex, Margaretting?
Gertrude Emily FRANCIS, 7, ditto, b. Essex, Inglatestone
Gordon James ditto, 5, ditto, b. ditto
Kate Eliza ditto, 3, ditto, b. ditto

This would put Martha Ann's birth in 1880 or 1881 rather than the date of 1871 you have.  I've found a birth in 1880 which would tie up with the Martha Ann from the 1891 census record:

September Quarter 1880
COOPER, Martha Ann
Chelmsford 4a 287

Margaretting came under the Chelmsford registration district.

I can't find Martha Ann in either the 1881 or 1901 censuses.

The Francis family are present and correct at High St Ingatestone in 1901 apart from Gertrude.Martha Cooper could be married of course. She is not with the rest of the family.

Found Gertrude in Paddington working as a servant.

Apologies - of course Martha Ann was born c1881. She and her half & step siblings were my wife's Aunts & Uncles. Kate Eliza being her Mother (my wife was a VERY late baby!!
Nevertheless it would good to find out if my wife has any cousins (1st, 2nd or 3rd, who may be still living, perhaps in Essex.
She did visit her Ingatestone relatives in the mid 1930s, but she was a very small child then, & her very elderly sister (aged 92) has no recollection at all. If you look in my postings under "binge" you should find all that I know. Please let me know if anything else is required
