Having a wee look on this one and not getting a clearcut answer.

There are 2 Smedley girls born in Ashby de la Zouch of the right age...

I looked for a Catherine born about the right time in Ashby and looked for similar surnames.

They are in the same building as a family called BAKER.


In 1851 the Katherine Ball was born in Ashby.

Looking at Freebmd there is a marriage between Catherine Ball and Samuel Young Smedley in 1852 Qtr March 7a 285 District Leicester.

Could someone please help me to locate an ancestor of mine in the 1861 census?

Her name is Catherine Smedley who was born in the March qtr. of 1852 in Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire.

To my knowledge, Catherine ("Kate") Smedley is my great-great-grandmother. Catherine married James Charles White http://sheaves.familytreeguide.com/descend.php?personID=I3529&tree=2 and at the time of the 1881 Census, they lived in the St. Martin District of Birmingham at 215 Sherlock St with their four children: Ros(s)etta, b1876; Beatrice, b1878; Minnie, b1879; and William, b1880. By 1891, the Whites lived above the Stag & Pheasant Pub at Pershore 1, Warwickshire, with one more child, Kezia, b1884. Kezia is my great-grandmother.

Started this thread in 2004 and have now traced the family up to 1881.

Any new information is very both very helpful and appreciated.
