an American arriving in England pre 1901
« on: Monday 08 November 04 12:33 GMT (UK) »
Hello All

I was not sure where to post this query so here goes.

I have a John Nolan born 1869 Minnesota who arrived in England prior to the 1901 census where I have him in Camberwell boarding with a family.
My question is would there be any info relating to John Nolan arriving in England perhaps a passenger list etc.
I also have John in the 1880 census in the US.
hoping someone can throw some hints my way for I am beginning to clutch at straws here.

Many thanks

Hi Troods,

I don't know of any ship's lists  from West to East, but what about

a) immigration records.  Don't know where to look, Kew is the most likely place.

b) did he "stay american" or did he become a "naturalised british subject" ?
If so, there should be records here, probaly also also at Kew. I don't know what info. is in the records, but I think I recall someone here saying that she found the naturalisation records for an ancestor and there was a lot of useful info. there.

c) Registration of Aliens - there may be records of this

See also these tips from "JDG":

ps.  Kew = National Archives:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/registration/  Check here first which records are available

Hope this helps
Good luck !
Bob
