   Just to add....

The possible second marriages that Valda found.....

Martha Horsley married George Winterton found as family unit in 1881...

That would leave Mary Ann Hunt .

F.W.K. = Frame Work Knitter.

Getting back to Charles Henry Baxter.
I think there is a clue to his birth place
In the 1891. Census returns  RG 12. / 2535. / 125. / Page. 32.
Place of birth given as
All Saints Parish Leicester.
So….. When the Records Office opens again after renovations
22nd Oct I’ll trawl the Parish Registers to see what I can come up with

According to a PM from Maeve  Charles was involve with the Army
Which would explain his missing on the 1881 census (1st. Boar War 1880 ~81.)

MIKE.

I cannot thank you all for the help you have given me.  If you do find anything else, please let me know.

Query regarding burial of Sarah Ann.

Buried in Unconsecrated Ground, Coroner's report.  Correct me if I am wrong but I was always told that in bygone days, only people who commited suicide or were not baptised at birth were buried in such a manner.  Unless she was a Witch, she would maybe have been burnt and buried at the crossroad.  I would love to find out why she was buried in such an uncaring manner.  Or, maybe they could not afford to have her buried by the Church.  My guess is suicide or unexplained death, mainly due to fact of Coroners report.  Regards Maeve

Well done Mike.....lots of information there.

As per pm I wondered about  1st Boer war could he have lied about age then or would they have accepted him.

The Charles I found in Leicester 1866 7a 171 is still looking promising.

Have sent pm to Maeve of possible death of Charles Henry...fingers crossed.

Hi its Maeve again

Regarding Army for Charles Henry Baxter.  Family gossips said that he was given a choice of going to Jail or joining the army. No idea what he had done to be given this ultimatum

By the nineteenth century, the Church’s attitude to the burial of suicides had begun to soften and through an Act of Parliament of 1823, such burials were permitted in graveyards, though the property of suicides was still subject to forfeiture for another fifty years.

The unconsecrated ground may just mean that Sarah Ann wasn't buried in the Anglican section of the churchyard but in the non-conformist section. If you couldn't afford the burial then you would be buried in a common grave. A great many burials in cemeteries were in common graves. You didn't have to be a pauper to end up in a common grave. Ordinary families often couldn't afford the price of a cemetery plot.

Her death could be a suicide, but in could equally be accidental or unexpected. Obtaining her death certificate would be the simplest way to find out how she died.

1716 I think was the date of the last witch executed in England (hanged not burnt). We never really got going on witch burning since the prefered method of execution was hanging. In comparison  to Europe relatively few witches were executed in England.

Marriages Jun 1869
CORBETT  Mary Ann    Leicester  7a 301
Hunt  Charles Toplos     Leicester  7a 301

1871 census RG10 3276 folio 12
143 Bedford Street St Margaret Leicester Leicestershire
Charles Hunt 21 Leicestershire, Head Married Bobbin Turner
Mary A Hunt 19 Hinckley, Leicestershire,  Wife Married Cotton Winder
Elizabeth Hunt  1 Leicestershire,  Daughter

1891 census RG12 2530 folio 106
20 Rodney Street St Margaret  Leicester Leicestershire
Thomas Corbett 78 Hinckley, Leicestershire,  Head Married F W K
Elizabeth Corbett  68 Hinckley Wife Married
John Corbett 31 Leicester,  Son Single Chimney Sweep
Mary A. Baxter 40 Hinckley, Leicestershire, Daughter Widow Cashmere winder
plus 4 boarders (who may or may not have something to do with Mary Ann judging from the 1901 census)

None of this helps with finding the Baxter family in 1881.

I presume the marriage of Benjamin junior in 1880 which would give a very convenient address did not take place at St. Margarets?

Regards

Valda
