Brewery c.1850
« on: Wednesday 04 October 06 19:15 BST (UK) »
Would there have been many breweries in Dumfries c.1850?  My g.g.grandfather I have just discovered was a brewer and his name is Joseph Harper.
Thanks for any help.

Hi there,

I'm not sure if there would have been directories for Dumfries at that point.  You could always try the Dumfries FHS website at http://www.dgfhs.org.uk/ as that might have some useful info or links.

Cheers,

Hi Pimms,

Just read your post.  Not sure if you have found any info, but there were a few distilleries in and around Dumfries in the 19th century.  One, located at Distillery Farm, outisde Annan - found in the County of Dumfries was operational until the 1914.  It's listed and a building at risk (refer to)

Local museums should help you too.

Happy hunting.
