SOBEY name in Devon
« on: Saturday 07 October 06 01:07 BST (UK) »
One Sobey name of interest is Ellen Jane SOBEY.   In the early 1900s she was married to George John Flisher and residing in the Devonport region.

Wondering if Sobey is a common Devon name.

Also, details about the Flisher name in Devon would be of interest.

Some other names of interest would include Zelley. Parkhouse, Southcott,
and Selley
Zelley,  Lovell, Godbold, Woods, Phillips, Lewis, Emery,
Magee, Baker, White. Flisher, Kyne, Tilston, Valence/Vallens,
Mabb/Mabbe, Bellamy, Selley, Martha Smith, Arno (of Dartmouth, Devon}.
Dorset, London, Warwick, East Anglia, Kent,  Devon
North Wales

The ancestors lived here and there, in many scattered
places, with various occupations

http://www.spatial-literacy.org/UCLnames/Surnames.aspx - you can search here to get an idea about where in the country .  They certainly classify Sobey as an English name, regional, 'South Western', and it seems to be common in Devon.

freebmd shows Ellen Jane Sobey was b. 1869 and married 1898 to George John, both these events were registered in Stoke Damerel.

In 1891 she was in Stoke Damerel with her family.

The Flisher name does not seem to be linked to Devon.   I think George John Flisher may be the one in 1871 who is in Plymstock, aged 5months, his father, mother, and elder sister all b. Weymouth Dorset - his father was in the Coast Guard.

By 1881 his mother is widowed and a servant in London in the house of Robert Denny, George is visiting with her.

In 1901 George is in Devonport with Ellen, indexed as 'Fisher'.
Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

The early location of the Flisher name is the County of Kent.

In 1891. George is residing on Cove Street.  Weymouth, Dorset.  His sister
Emma was residing with an aunt Lydia (White) Simpson nearby.  The next establishment was The Old Rooms Inn and the Mabey family
George was listed as a boat building apprentice.   Then he left for Devon once again after so many years.  His mother was remarried to Richard Zelley,
the now long retired coast guard mariner.

An interesting twist to the group of names is the son of Richard was
called William John Simpson Zelley (he would be a cousin of George and Emma
and a nephew of Lydia).
