In 1901 this is her household -

RG13/3094 Folio 71 Page 41
140 Stanley Road, Clee, Lincs

Maria Holmes 35 wife Marshchapel
+ son Ernest Carter 16 General Labourer Grimsby
+ daughters Annie (14) and Lizzie Carter (9) both born Grimsby
+ boarder George Do..ie 18 Fisherman Grimsby

so is Carter her maiden name or a previous married name?

Will check 1891 census.....

so presumably Mr Carter had died by then so she wasnt a bigamist too when she married Mr Holmes? or was she the one Mr Carter committed bigamy with so she wasnt legally married to him anyway?

amended - just read your post saying maiden name was Holmes??

Cant be if they married in 1900........unless Herbert Cordon remarried to the other bride on the page (Harriet Codd) and Maria Holmes married the other groom listed on the page.....  :-\  might be worth getting the certificate.....

yes maybe your right but i always understood her to be born holmes
alas there is no one to ask mmmm so you think she married herbert then
so this means her maiden name is something completly different! confusion lol

or the registrar could have entered the fathers/brothers name in error........ my grandad has his brothers name as his dad on his marriage cert! If you order the cert, just put her name down, not both or they tend to return half your money and say no one of that match could be found.....
