Hi Cardiff

It appears to be part of the A474, type Melincryddan into http://www.multimap.com it circles the part of the road now known as Mile End Row

Hi, i live a stone's throw from what was known as Mile End Row.  The road is still there but all the old houses were demolished approx 30 yrs ago and new flats and sheltered housing were built instead. The new houses being called mile end row as well!

If you are familiar with Neath its the area on the main road through to the town centre from Briton Ferry. Its oppostite the old Metal Box factory. There's a petrol station and Lidl opposite if that's any help!!

Any questions just ask  :)

Have just noticed the second part of your question  ::)

The main industry in the Melin area was the tin plate works. The area was heavily industrialized and densly populated.

Oddly enough I have relatives who lived in Mile End Row and the occupation of the head of the household was a haulier...
but mine were there on the 1891 census not 1851 (but there again i have been unable to find the family in 1851).  Are we talking Parkers here?  ;D

Hi aderyndu
Many thanks for the info.
The family I  am interested in is the Palmer Family in 1851 and 1861 George Palmer was also a Hualier and lived at Mile end row.
I believe when george dies his wife moved to Greenway terrace Neath.
cheers cardiff ;)

Hi, my relative was also called George  :o !!

so we have a George Palmer and George Parker, both hauliers and both lived in Mile End Row!!  But at different times.... Could've been confusing.

At the moment I'm looking through some books of photos of old Neath for someone else, if I find any pics of the old Mile End Row I'll scan and send them.

It took its name from being where the milestone indicating the miles to London  is placed if thats of any intrest.

my George died in 1918. I think his 3 wives, 9 children and 3 step-children finally saw him off  ;)

it was no 15 mile end row he lived.
