Hi, all you clever people out there.

I'm having trouble finding info regarding a relative of mine, even though there name, I think, is not very common.

In the 1881 census, James SNELLING (my g grandfather) was a farm labourer aged 17 years. It shows his birth place as Upminster, Essex.

The dwelling in the census was that of;
Upphavering Farm, Southend Road, Hornchuch.

Is this farm still working ?, Doe's anyone one know where it is/was situated ?, Do you know of the SNELLING family ?

I'd love to hear from you, even with the slightest of information.

Good morning, If you use the facility provided by LDS to backtrack through the  households enumerated prior to the one which included James Snelling you will very quickly come to those for Abbs Cross Lane. If you then go to
www.streetmap.co.uk
and search for 'Abbs Cross Lane' you will be taken to a map of today which shows South End Road running into Abbs Cross Lane. Whether that shows a farm still working there seems very doubtful......but maybe you can fairly closely pinpoint where it was

I live a stone throw from Abbs Cross Lane and South End Road and it is all built up now no farms there, you may be able to get some information either from

www.havering.gov.uk or www.barking-dagenham.gov.uk

Once you know where the lane is from Streetmap, you can then try "Oldmaps" which give details of the 1870s O/S maps of the UK. Sadly the link is down this weekend.

If you go to Old-Maps (www.old-maps.co.uk) and enter the co-ordinates:
                        553189,186081(don't forget the comma)

you'll see Uphavering Farm.  It no longer exists, Southend Road being built up.

Thank you ALL for the info on the where-abouts of the farm, I know exactly where it is now as when I was an apprentice I worked around that area of Hornchurch.

If any one can help with more info on the SNELLING family, I'd love to hear from you.

I would suggest that you have a look at www.romford.org this is a site run by Phil Steer and although it's main purpose is to relate the history of Romford it also covers the surrounding area's such as Hornchurch. Once on the home page click on the "A-Z Index" top left of the page. Once opened click on "F" and then on Family Histories where you can post a search request there for your Snelling family. There is a sister site to this one for messages and you will find a link to it on the Romford main page.
