On 1841 Census Doctor? How do I find more?

I have found ancestor who was listed on 1831 census as a doctor.

Two questions-
1.Did Doctor mean what we mean by doctor
2.How many places trained doctors and how to you find this info?

I am in Australia so if there is a way you can find this online or some way not needing to go somewhere there

Was there any more info, or just 'Doctor'?  There were several different organisations which licensed people to practice medicine - so the records will be different if he was a Surgeon, or a Physician, etc, or if he was an army or navy doctor, and so on.

I think the first thing to do would be to get as many census records/births of children/his marriage/his death as you can to see if there's more information about his occupation.

Someone here on RC gave me the info from the 1841 Census re the doctor occupation, though I had heard it from family rumour before.  But only real source Census.

Looked at the sites, Thanks for your trouble there.  Lots of places to search, hard to know where to start as have so little to go on.
