OK, so I did just that and phoned the take-away - but they're closed for their hols for a couple of weeks.

... but the computer training place a few doors away is open for business. They confirmed that the George is still there and also open for business.

Perhaps I'll pay a visit someday soon.

Thanks for your help and suggestions.

Thanks, Joe.

Looking back at this thread I realise I never actually said why I wanted to know - I wasn't just looking for decent pint.

It seems that around the 1820s one of my ancestors (and probably his father before him) was innkeeper there. It looks like an Abraham Armytage was killed in 1825 and the innkeeper taken into custody for his murder (later found not guility at York Assizes).

Not surprisingly I'm keen to find out more. I thought I could ask at the pub on the off chance there are any old strories about this. A long shot perhaps, but you never know.

HI Les

I take it you've see this website then where it shows the George Inn was once in the hands of a

Richard Booth  in 1822 and again in 1824

Yes, Wendy - thanks.

I'm pretty sure Richard was the guy accused and then found not guilty and disharged. I've got a brother living not too far from Kew and asked him to do some research at the National Archives. Hopefully I'll discover some more details.

Richard was the grandfather of Charles Booth about whom we corresponded previously.
