Hi there

What is the reference for this - what record have you got that speaks of this place(s)

There is a Kendal in Westmorland - Westmorland borders Cumberland......
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/WES/

There is also a parish called Brough....

I'm afraid the only testimony I have is the word of my grandmother.

I knew where Kendal was (been there a couple of times) but I couldn't find anything on a place called Backborough or Blackborough.

Thanks for your time, I will keep on searching!

It's clearly a word ending they use around there ... if you look at Kendal at www.old-maps.co.uk you'll see a Skewbarrow and Kirkbarrow very close to Kendal.

OK. The trouble is I only have my auntie's testimony (she heard it from her mother). She said it was definitely Kendal, but she wasn't sure if it was Backborough or Blackborough. But it could equally be Backbarrow...

Hi

If it will help us to help you, perhaps you might explain what the connection to Black/Back Borough (or Backbarrow) is believed to be:

Was it where a family lived? The name of a farm? Where someone was born? Or died? Might we hope to come across it it on a Census as an address or part of an address for someone specific?

Cheers

Yes maybe I should lol

It is apparently where my great grandmother Maria Ainsworth, was born and raised.
