if he was a solicitor would there be records
« on: Tuesday 09 November 04 02:41 GMT (UK) »
Hello All

I have some info  that states Thomas Hall as being a solicitor in Kent circa 1840's. Thomas died 1854 aged 65 years.
Would there be any records or details anywhere concerning him in this profession.
I know this is a long shot but am hoping for miracle.
I have no idea as to where he lived in Kent however he is buried at Hothfield.

Regards
Troods

Hi Troods,
The closest large town to Hothfield in Kent is Ashford.

On the Genuki site there is a Thomas Hall & Co listed in Ashford in Pigot's Directory for 1840. http://users.ox.ac.uk/~malcolm/genuki/big/eng/KEN/

It doesn't state his trade but maybe someone can do a lookup for you on Pigot's.

Hope this helps.

Troods

Was that you that posted for a lookup in Ashford on the Kent list (Trudi) ??

I will have a look at Hothfield for you, but Ashford is too big to search through.

Hello Troods,

You should be able to check whether Thomas Hall registered as a solicitor as The Law Society was founded prior to the time he was practising in the profession.

Formation of the Law Society

In 1823, several prominent attorneys met to call for the formation of 'The London Law Institution' to raise the reputation of the profession by setting standards and ensuring good practice. This would be housed near the Inns of Court. By 1825 the term 'London' was dropped from the title to reflect the Institution's national aspirations.

The Society was founded on 2 June 1825, when a committee of management was appointed. The Society acquired its first royal charter in 1831, and opened a new building in Chancery Lane, in 1832.
