Hello juju - I would say the first word in the cause of death column is Phthisis (TIE-sis) which is the old word for tuberculosis.
To me the name looks like Martha Sweetman.
As for the residence - is there a place called Lizard - if so this will give a lead to the next bit ?
I'm sure someone on Rootschat will ' see ' better than I but perhaps this is a start  ::)

Hi

Agree with Emmeline re: COD - but after seeing the Census below, and re-looking at the cert name, I think it's surname: SWATMAN

1841 Census Wynmondham, Norfolk
Hundred: Forehoe , RD: Forehoe
REF : HO107/767/25 , Folio 17, Pg 2
ADDRESS : Lizard *
Robert SWATMAN Brickmaker 50
Ann SWATMAN 45
Robert SWATMAN 20 AG Lab
John SWATMAN 15 Ag Lab
Sophia SWATMAN 12
George SWATMAN 9
James SWATMAN  5

and further down:

ADDRESS: Lizard
William SWATMAN 20 Ag Lab
Martha SWATMAN 20
Robert SWATMAN 3
James SWATMAN 2
Maria SWATMAN 8 mths

All born in County.

* The first family on the page is listed at address "Lizard House", but for all the others, including the 2 SWATMAN families, it just says  Address: "Lizard"

Cheers

Hi,

I agree with Phthisis the next line looks like 'one year' then certified.

Also agree the name as Martha Swatman, her X mark, present at death.  It does look like lizard but have no idea what the last line is.

Well done Ambly and Magrat  :) :)

I like the sound of Lizard House - wonder why it was given that name ? ..........

Thankyou Magrat (Do you read Terry Pratchett by any chance), Emmeline and Ambly for your help. I agree it certainly looks like Swatman. Thankyou for the census info. Ann lived in Lizard, Wymondham. I think it was her neighbour. On the off chance that it was a relative I have kept the details.
The area is still there in Wymondham. I haven't been able to find out yet if Lizard House is still there or why it was named so.

Happy Hunting

Hi JuJu
Martha & William Swatman were direct ancestors of mine. Was the death certificate a Swatman?

I saw on "BBC WW2 people's war" site someone talking about life on the Lizard. She lived at no.9 and says there were about 52 houses on the right of the road and just Lizard House on the left.

We recently visited Wymondham and went to see the Lizard.  There are a lot of old houses on the right but just waste land to the left dropping down to a railway line so Lizard House can't be there any longer.

I grew up near a house named "Lizard Manor" - so called as the Manor was for many years the property of the Ironmongers Livery Company of London whose coat of arms contains 2 lizards.
