Help Marriage John COLLINS Complete
« on: Thursday 12 October 06 12:13 BST (UK) »
My great grandfather John Collins is shown on the 1881 census as living in Henley with Wife Catherine & three children

I am having difficulty tracing the marriage of John to Catherine

Their eldest daughter was born in Q4 1872 so I'm assuming they were married before that

I can see a John Collins marrying in Henley Q3 1871 but I can't work out who to!

Any help gratefully appreciated
Warner, Collins, Lingwood, Gilham, Willamant, Denney
Fardoe, Burgess, Sharp, Beardmore, Rye, Taylor, Brice, Pullen, Sayer

Bird, Paddick, Bennett, Dean

Hi Danae,

If you click on the page number, you'll see the 2 possible brides:
Sarah Elizabeth Alleway or Florence Elizabeth S Perry  :-\

By the way - I can't see the 1881 record for this family  ??? Could you post the reference?

OK - I think I've got them - they are in Binfield, Berkshire, right?

I see there is a large gap between Fanny E and Amy... Was Fanny registered as Fanny Collins? Have you found John in 1871?

I'm answering my own questions  ;D

John is single in 1871, already in Berkshire.

I was thinking (given the gap between the 2 children) that the marriage to Catherine might have been a 2nd marriage. There is a marriage in Henley in 1878 for a John Collins, but no spouses are transcribed so far  :-\

Still searching...

How does this look?

Remember the 1878 marriage for John Collins. Reference was Dec 1878 Henley 3a  1056A

Searching the 1871 census for a Catherine born ca. 1847 Wargrave, the best match is:
Catherine S Treacher, sister in law, unm, 23, b. Wargrave at Gloucester st George with Edwin and Mary A Newson.

Searching the complete marriage index for Dec 1878 under the name Treacher, we have:
Catherine Sarah Treacher, Henley 3a 1056A

His first wife would have been Sarah Elizabeth Alleway, as there is a death as follows:
Sarah Elizabeth Collins age 37 June quarter 1878 Henley.

You are Amazing!!!

Thank you so much, that all makes perfect sense.

Fanny was registered as fanny Elizabeth Collins in Q4 1872

I shall order Fanny's birth certificate to see if her Mum was Sarah

Will let you know the outcome

Is it Fanny that you are tracing, or one of the other children?

I can see John with his parents in 1861 - any use?

I'll also get the marriage certificate for John to Catherine, that will show if he was a widow :)

Amy Elizabeth Collins was my great grandmother so John & Catherine would have been my great great grandparents

I'm doing well with Fanny, less good with Amy - she married John Henry Warner on Oct 13 1901 but I can't seem to find her on the 1901 census.

the rest of the family were living in greenwich at that time and Fanny was living in Deptford with her husband Herbert Parnum Barrett (although they're shown on the census as barrAtt)

Would you like census returns for Amy's mother Catherine?
