Jailer at Gloucester jail about 1865
« on: Saturday 14 October 06 20:44 BST (UK) »
My great grandfather was a jailer at Gloucester jail. His name was John Richardson. He had a 6 shooter Unicorn revolver which I sold for £40 in 1966. There was a fine wooden case and bullet making moulds in it. There was a receipt for it inside, dated 1866. Does anyone know whether it was mandatory for a jailer to own a revolver for his job in those days? Also, you can search for names of people who were inmates of jails, but what about searching for people who worked there like my g/grandfather?

Cheers,
Spen.
