I agree re marriage- was a bit puzzled re the query that emgee has about age- if born March 1846, then he would be 5 in the census - it all fits and now you have Elizabeth in the same street, that's great.

This is excellent work and the best news I have had this week.

Elizabeths father and grandparens came from Calais and appear in the 1841 Cenus (HO 107 / 594 / 3 but the house numbers are not shown

It is a roundabout route but I was hoping to show which Ann Thornley married John Knott in 1849. (see my other thread).
I know that the Ann Thornley (which someone had claimed married an Arthur Orton)
had a sister Ellen who married a Joseph Chadwick. So there is at least a tenuous connection thanks to your efforts.

I've just discovered from FeeBMD that Ann Thornley married John Knott in the same quarter of 1849 that Ellen Thornley married Joseph Chadwick.

Could it have been a double wedding?

Must get Ellens and Joseph's Cert.

yes it was- they have 5 children - Joe is a cattle dealer.
Elizabeth Knott is a dressmaker.

Now I'm not so sure.
Having obtained Ellen Thornley's Marriage Cert  it is dated 6 days after 'my' Ann Thornley and a witness is Ann Thornley (when my Ann would have been a Knott)
Two of Ellen's elder brothers married an Ann so it may have been one of them.
However Ann and Ellen were married at differrent churches - Ann at the Baptist Chapel and Ellen at the Parish Church. This I find surprising but I would appreciate any comments

I have just looked at your two threads for inspiration!
As you say, Ellen may have chosen her sister in law as a witness - does the other one give any clues?
Who were witnesses at Ann Thornley's marriage?
As to the church - I suppose it would depend on lots of things - husband may have had a say in it; they may not have been regular church goers or indeed one may have bene strong baptist- who knows?
I agree it is frustrating.
I noticed on the other thread, someone had justified a choice through children's names- have you followed these families in subsequent censuses to finf any family names?
I feel as though I am rambling on here to find a solution that is not appearing just yet.

Ramble as much as you like!
Witnesses at Helens marriage to Joe Chadwick were Thomas Chadwick and Ann Thornley.  At Ann's wedding to john knott they were Edwin Thornley and Ann Knott.
The Ann Knott  wasn't John.s mother although he did have a sister Hannah it seems possible it was his sister in law - I need to check
Both brides' father given as Thomas Thornley - labourer.
It's an interesting point re. children's names I'll have a look.
Edwin Thornley married later in 1849 I might have to invest in his certificate.
