I have just looked at your two threads for inspiration!
As you say, Ellen may have chosen her sister in law as a witness - does the other one give any clues?
Who were witnesses at Ann Thornley's marriage?
As to the church - I suppose it would depend on lots of things - husband may have had a say in it; they may not have been regular church goers or indeed one may have bene strong baptist- who knows?
I agree it is frustrating.
I noticed on the other thread, someone had justified a choice through children's names- have you followed these families in subsequent censuses to finf any family names?
I feel as though I am rambling on here to find a solution that is not appearing just yet.
