Abingdon Gaol
« on: Wednesday 18 October 06 03:33 BST (UK) »
Hi chatters
I have a William Beesley in 1841 a prisoner in Abingdon Gaol who closely resembles an ancestor I'm trying to locate
My guy c1786+- doesn't turn up anywhere else that I can see in 1841 and being from Drayton just down the road from Abingdon, figure the jailbird is a likely culprit
Problem is Berks record office tell me there are no Prison Calendars for the time period and the only WB that turns up in the QS order books is from White Waltham and appears to have a completely different vocation to my guy apart from the fact that there is no indication that this is the guy in Gaol anyway.
Does anybody on list know of any source that will tell me where the guy in Abingdon Gaol is from??
thanks in anticipation Chris

Check out the Assizes records at TNA - they may shed some light on the chap.

The other source is local papers - criminal courts were always good copy.
