Hi
Can you give us a clue where in Sussex she might be?  It is a big county and a fairly common name.  The only likely one at first glance is living in Brighthelmstone with John age 60, Mary 25 and Marian 3 but none of them are born in the county of Sussex.

Hi Andrea,

Thanks much for the info on Isaac Lustead.

Re:  Elizabeth Williams.  I suspect she may have been living in Salehurst or Etchingham.  Her husband's name was Henry... but he may have died before 1841.

Thanks,

Jann

HO107 1108/7 F12 p16 Cold Harbour Cottage Salehurst
Elizth Williams 50
Marg 17
Willm 15 ag lab
Jane 12 all born Sussex
then a mark and
Henry Croft 60 ag lab b Sx
Also on that film F 42 p17 Higham Lodge
Henry Williams 36 Gardener
Elizabeth 37
George 11
John 7
Elizabeth 2

There is an Esther Williams age 20 a bit further along the road.

You see the problem if there is not enough information given originally!  The more you give the easier it is.   All BMDs are free to search on ancestry.co.uk so it might be worth you searching those to see if Henry died after 1837.

Hi Andrea,

thanks for going the extra mile and adding the information about Henry Williams the gardener.  What I'm trying to do is cobble together enough circumstantial evidence to be reasonably certain that Elizabeth Lustead Williams, is my gggg grandmother.

an Elizabeth Lustead was born  1787 in Salehurst; an Elizabeth Lustead m.  Henry Williams in Jan 1805, in Salehurst one of the witnesses being Isaac Lustead .  Elizabeth would have been  18 at the time of the marriage.

Henry the gardener was born in Dec. 1805. to Elizabeth and Henry Williams  If this Elizabeth Williams's age was rounded down to 50 and she was  was actually @54   She would be 18 years older than Henry, age 36.

The fact that Henry was living nearby (as was an Isaac Lustead) is leading me to conclude that
I'm on the right track.  Esther williams was a maid in Higham House and I suspect a sister of Henry the gardner; if this all proves out then I will have discovered some of Henry's siblings as well as learning his mother's maiden name.

If you see any flaws in my reasoning or can add anything additional, I'd be grateful.

Jann

Sounds good to me.    I looked at the marriage on the Sussex Marriage Index and there was no further information.  In fact it did not give the witnesses - just shows that it is always worth looking at the original record.
I assume you have these other marriages if you have looked at the parish register but will list them anyway.
All at Salehurst
3 Feb 1780 Isaac to Esther Forster by licence
1 Feb 1818 Isaac 36 to Sarah Vigor 38 banns
1 Jan 1822 Joseph 23 to Benedicta Standen 30 banns
14 Oct 1825  Thomas 24 to Elizabeth Heathfield 19 bann
5 Feb 1820 William 23 to Sarah Page 23 banns
13 Oct 1804 Esther to Stephen Tendall licence
28 Feb 1792 Mary to William Woodgate of Hawkhurst
23 Jan 1837 Sarah to Willam Jempson
I always like to look at the extended family.  Makes it much more interesting.

Andrea,

Thanks for the extra information from the marriage index.  Every bit helps when one is dealing with events that took place prior to 1837.
