Multyfarnham - CLAFFEY, SHIEL/S
« on: Thursday 19 October 06 08:12 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am searching for any information on the below family:

Edward CLAFFEY bn ~1835 Ireland, died bef 1875, Ireland married 25 Apr 1855 Multyfarnham, Westmeath to
Catherine SHIEL/S bn ~1838 Ireland, died 1906 Ravensthorpe, Western Australia

Children all baptised in Multyfarnham
Bridget CLAFFEY ~1855 (unable to find her baptism in parish records)
Michael CLAFFEY 3 Aug 1856
John CLAFFEY 17 Sep 1858
Anne CLAFFEY 1 Mar 1861
Catherine CLAFFEY 25 Mar 1863
Patrick Joseph CLAFFEY 18 Oct 1865
Mary CLAFFEY 4 Jul 1868

Mother - Catherine and all 7 children left for Queensland, Australia in Feb 1875 (so we presume Edward died in Ireland)

We have confirmed most of the baptisms and their marriage from the Multyfarnham parish records in Dublin however neither Edward nor Catherine seem to have been born in that parish.

Their address on Patrick's birth entry was Ballyharney, Multyfarnham - can someone tell me where that is?

Catherine's parents were Michael Shiel and Mary Hyland.

Can anyone shed any further light on this family?

Many thanks for any help given.

Hi Julie,

I know this is a long time since posting, but I hope you are still on the list.  I am sorry that I can't shed any further light on this family but I was wondering how you were able to confirm Catherine's parents?  Were they listed on her Death Certificate from 1906 as they weren't listed on her marriage record in Westmeath in 1855.  I too am trying to find more information on Catherine's family as you list Mother Mary Hyland, Father Michael Shiel, and Husband Edward Claffey.

Many Thanks

Sally

The first born girl Bridget may have been born at her maternal Granny's house.
Roman Catholic New born babies were baptized very close to Birth date.
So if you do find where the Granny lived you may be able to check Baptisms in that parish.

Edward may have gone to  Australia ahead of wife & family
If Edward had died in Ireland, you may be able to get Death Certificate for him
Civil registration began in 1864 in Ireland

Thank you healyj for your reply. I appreciate the hot tip on the Maternal Granny. It is interesting as I am trying to find out more about the Maternal Grandmother of the other 6 children including the youngest Mary Claffey (my 2x GGrandmother). I have an inkling that perhaps the first child Bridget was born in 1854 to a different Mother?? There is a baptism for a Bridget Claffey on 11 Oct 1854 in Mullingar Westmeath with Father named as Edward Claffey and Mother named as "Not Recorded Killard" with no sponsors named? I know it is a long shot but perhaps the Killard mother died and when Edward Claffey and Catherine Shiel married 25 Apr 1855 in Multyfarnham the child Bridget may have been included in the family? There doesn't seem to be that many Edward Claffey's in the records around that time in Westmeath so I am hoping it isn't a coincidence?

Best Regardsand thanks again ... Sally
