Marriage certificate, (correct forum?)
« on: Wednesday 10 November 04 11:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi i don't know whether this is the correct forum but i can't seem to find one so i'll post it here.

Could someone find me a marriage certificate for William and Harriet Howes. They were married before 1873 because that's when Caroline their daughter (my great great gran) was born but i don't know if they had any other children. it would be such a great help, thank you so much

Do you have Harriets maiden name from Caroline's birth certificate?

Sorry, you have to pay the GRO £7 to obtain her birth certificate if you order online. The only other alternative is to get someone to look in the Parish records of St Ives for you to see if she was baptised and hope that her parents got married in the same parish.

I've looked on freebmd and found the following index

~~~~~~~~
Marriages Dec 1866
~~~~~~~~

HOWES  William    St. Ives  3b 640

Could this be your William? You can order the certificate for £7 as i said previously but this can get costly especially if you're not sure its the correct person, but its a bit of a coincidence with name and location especially as St Ives isn't that big a place. There was no spouse named on the website but this is not unusal as they haven't yet transcribed the entire index.

Hope it helps.

Caroline Howes' birth is also on www.freebmd.org.uk - births registered in the Jan-Mar quarter 1873, St Ives, vol. 3b page 305.  You can order the certificate from www.gro.gov.uk.  I'd get this first as there is a William HOWES in St Ives at the time who doesn't appear to be connected.  He was born in Norfolk c.1841, married a Hannah born c.1840 Friday Bridge/Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, and had moved to Dorking in Surrey by 1881.

Strictly speaking you are on the wrong forum though.  St Ives was in Huntingdonshire at the time.  It's in Cambridgeshire now.
