Adeys Buildings

my family of Breakspears were listed on the census of 1891 as resident Adeys buildings. i know this was in Greenham. (their occupation was given as general dealers).
anyone have any knowledge/ideas as to where or what the buildings were?

Hi Irene,
Adeys Close still exists, I think Adeys Buildings stood where this little close stands now. The Close is shown on the 1898 OS map of Greenham/Newbury  It is in Newbury Parish on the parish Boundary of Greenham.
The area was classed as Light industrial/residential.
Maybe the Newbury Family History Society can shed some light on this for you.

Adey's Close is a tiny road. It is no more than a short alley running from York Road to Stroud Green.  Buildings here might just have been in Greenham (right on the old boundary). There is little sign of it in the 1st ed OS maps (late 1870s)- the area is mainly fields and gardens at that time.
The streets around are full of typical Victorian/Edwardian housing - suburbia for the working man of the time. There are a few buildings in the rough vicinity (it is difficult to say for sure).

Checking an oldish directory (1957) I see that Adeys Buildings were there  - between 19 York Rd and Stroud Green (search for Adeys Close on www.streetmap.com to see the area). They are numbered 7 to 19 incl. Checking the area on the digital map on www.westberks.gov.uk allows you to zoom in and see the individual buildings in Adey's Close - which seem to me to be those that were once Adey's Buildings (still numbered as in 1957).

They are fairly typical terraced houses of the period. Nos 14 to 19 have nice views on to the Green. The white one in the photo facing the camera is No 15. No 12 is the white gable end.
