Marriage Search for Sinclair/Mackay
« on: Thursday 19 October 06 18:30 BST (UK) »
My Great Grandmother  Sarah Elizabeth Evans nee Sinclair was the daughter of Kennedy Sinclair Ch: 10 Apr 1802 Wick,Caithness. & Alice Mackay.

Despite my searches in various websites including Scottish I cannot find a Marriage for Kennedy & Alice.

With help from other Rooters etc.there is a possibility that Alice Mackay may have come from Eyemouth,Berwick Ch: 11 Jun 1809,but until I find evidence of their Marriage I am at a standstill.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Betty

Have you seen the 1841 Census for Wick - 043-16-7:

Kennedy Sinclair, 40-45, Farmer, born county
Elisha McKay (surname crossed out and Do added),30-35, borny county but then an I (for Ireland) added in the margin
John , 11, )there seems to be some confusion about these
Jean, 6     )two children'sbirthplaces
Ann, 1, born county

I'm not sure if they're yours but it's a possible.

Also, you might not find a marriage: many were irregular and quite legal in Scotland but not performed by a  minister and rarely recorded.

I'll see if I can find anything on the 1851 that might give better clues to Alice/Elisha's birthplace.

On the 1851 - High Church, Edinburgh 685/1 - 87/1 - 11

Kennedy Sinclair, 51, licensed porter and Chelsea pensioner, b. Caithness, Wick
Al, 41, b. Ireland
Ann, 11, b. Ireland
Catherine, 9, b, Wick
Mary, 6, b. Wick
Elizabeth, 4, b. Wick (I presume your ancestor)

It would therefore seem very unlikely that the Eyemouth baptism is your Alice.

Hi Gadget,

Thanks for this info. The 1841 may well be my family I am not so sure.

However,I do know that the 1851 is correct as the entry on the Marriage cert for
Sarah Elizabeth Sinclair states that Kennedy (her father) is a Pensioner (92nd Highlanders).

I did discover from another source that he was in fact a Chelsea Pensioner & as the 1851 states a Licensed Porter.

Whenever I have gone in to Scotlandspeople they have never found Kennedy Sinclair for me other than the one born 10.4.1802,so who is this one, born abt.1831.

It is no wonder I am confused & don't know where to look next.

Thanks once again

Hi Betty

I'm not sure what you printed off as the one I found in 1841 definitely showed K S as 40-45 - probably 41 - as I'm sure the ones I found  are yours. Elisha would be the Gaelic for Alice and everything else seems to fit with Ann being 1 in 1841 and 11 in 1851.

PM me if you like.

Don't know whether you've found this Betty but his army record is here:

http://tinyurl.com/yg62sb

I think you can order the full copy of the transcript.

His record states that he was serving 1817 - 1839 and discharged, aged 38.  92nd Foot Regiment.
