Lewis family - Whitchurch
« on: Friday 20 October 06 12:43 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'd be grateful for any information about William Lewis and Jane Lewis (nee Jones) who were listed at the Hollybush in Whitchurch in the 1851 census.

I believe William was born around 1808 and Jane was born around 1807.
I know from the census that Jane's father was Joseph Jones but I don't know who her mother was or who William's parents were.

Any information you may have about them will be most helpful.

Thanks in advance,
Bryan.

Hi Bryan

Welcome to Rootschat!  :)

What further information do you have on the JONESes?  I am guessing you haven't yet obtained the marriage cert for William and Jane?

An occupation for Joseph would help to narrow down the search.  Do you have them in 1841?

If you can post what resources you have searched and any refs for censuses, we can have alook for you

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi Arranroots,

Thanks for your reply and the welcome, I wish I'd found this site ages ago, I just stumbled across it today.

Unfortunately I don't have the marriage certificate for Willaim and Jane or the birth certificate for Augustus (see below).

I'm actually trying to trace the parents of an Augustus Lewis who, if I'm right, came up to Thornaby around 1870ish and married Elizabeth Tweddell in 1872 (found in local records and census details).
Their marriage certificate states that Augustus's father was William Lewis an innkeeper from Whitchurch.

The 1891 census (I think, I don't have my notes with me at the moment) states that Augustus was born in South Wales and subtracting his age from 1891 means he should have been born around 1842.

The 1881 census (RG11,piece/folio 5275/149, page 47) has Jane Lewis (Widow), licenced victualler, Merthyr Road Hollybush Inn, Whitchurch.

I then asked Pat Sewell (who's contact details I found on another site) to see if she could find any details of Jane Lewis to see if she had a husband called William and a son called Augustus who would have been born around 1842.

She managed to find the following details in the 1851 census for me:
(unfortunately she had just suffered a bereavement so I didn't want to bother her with more questions).

1851 census
Hollybush Whitchurch.
Joseph JONES head aged 73. Retired Inkeeper
William LEWIS. SL. M. aged 44. Innkeeper
Jane LEWIS. Wife. Aged 45 (daughter to the head of household)
Edmund LEWIS aged 17. grandson
Joseph LEWIS aged 15. grandson
William LEWIS aged 13. grandson
Sarah LEWIS aged 10. granddaughter
Samuel LEWIS aged 9. grandson
AUGUSTUS LEWIS aged 7. grandson  (1844)
Mary LEWIS aged 5. granddaughter
Benjamin LEWIS aged 4. grandson
Frances LEWIS aged 2. granddaughter
Jane LEWIS aged 1. granddaughter
Mary LEWIS. SD. Unm. Aged 59.
Sarah LEWIS. Servant aged 20

I've tried searching IGI but had no luck tracing either Jane's or William's parents.
I've also got copies of the Whitchurch parish records from the Glamorgan Family history society website but have not been able to find anything extra from them.

I've just noticed that it says grandson, not son, for Augustus so that's probably just thrown another spanner in the works...perhaps I need to start my search for Augustus's birth record again...

cheers,
Bryan.

Thanks Cas,

Unfortunately I think I've just found a hole in my research regarding Augustus.
(see above)

Looks like it's back to the drawing board for me...

Cheers,
Bryan.

Parents are William and Jane, it is listed as Joseph as head so they are down as grandchildren.

Have checked 1851 they are listed as sons/daughters of William/Jane. It does not say grandchildren

Head is Joseph retired inkeeper
William is son in law, innkeeper
Jane is wife***see above marriage
All rest are listed as son or dau.

It was the informants interpretation of the census which is correct, he is the head, they are his grandchildren.

This is looking promising then!

I am suffering from a case of the shivers (not just the flu!) because I have spent some considerable time searching for the father of an Augustine LEWIS!!

My chap was born in 1880 in Exeter, so unlikely to be related - unless you know different?  I don't suppose any of yours were cabinet makers?

;)

Cheers Cas!

I should have realised that,  I must be having a 'Friday afternoon' moment  ;D

Hi Arranroots,
no cabinet makers as far as I'm aware (mostly iron miners/workers so far).
That is a bit spooky though isn't it?  :D

Hopefully I'm still on the right track then   :)
