Agnes Ballantyne, Quebec
« on: Saturday 21 October 06 08:32 BST (UK) »
My great-grandmother, Agnes Ballantyne, was born in Quebec in 1846, according to the British censuses.  She married an English soldier, David Clarke, in 1865 in Quebec, and returned to England with him.  I have their marriage record, but have been unable to find anything at all about Agnes.  I would appreciate any help.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.

Hi Suttontrust,

Since you have their marriage certificate, perhaps Agnes lived in the area where they were married?  The 1851 Canada Census is on-line, but not indexed, http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/1851/index-e.html

Who all came to Canada in a little row boat, clap clap, clap your hands!!

Does the marriage certificate has Agnes' father on it at all?

I put the Quebec family history group onto it a couple of years ago and they came up with the marriage record below.  No father, as you see, although there is a Ballantyne as a witness whose name I can't make out unless it's another Agnes.  They said they'd looked for any more information about her but couldn't find anything.

If you look on the 1881 census of Canada..there are not that many Ballantyne families... Only 34 names in all Quebec
Please note that :The following replies from 1906 were missing information and is not the right family as a death was found for this Agnes...
Please go to page two for the correct information

Was her ancestry Scottish?
If so...One that sticks out in Bristol, Pontiac...
(as you said a Witness was Agnes, could it have been her mother's signature?)
as Peter b. 1813 & Agnes b. 1818 as BALLENTINE both born Scotland...and 7 children born Quebec...first around the age of your Agnes...There is also a David, outside the household ...says Ontario, but I wonder, as his children are Peter & Agnes...  they are in the very same town, and the only other Ballentines, with children Peter & Agnes...

Anyway, just a thought if you wanted to see if they also had a child born Agnes,
or with the middle name of Agnes....

There are as I said, other scattered Ballatynes...some say Scottish descent, some say French....

all the best, J.J.

This is exciting, I didn't know I could also access the whole 1851 census!!!

Oh, here you go!  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D , I looked at the 1851 and there she is!!!
as "Agnus Balentine"  about 1846 Bristol!  Put the surname as Balentine and there they all are in Bristol....
http://data2.collectionscanada.ca/1851_pdf/e093/e002309866.pdf

There's also a John born 1776 & Jane 1775 Scotland with a Hugh born 1809 Scotland... in previous listing, so could be her Grandparents and uncle also!!!!!

all the best, J.J.

Super...Hope that you can find more!
I.G.I....There are a couple of Janet marriages in 1804....( the 1809 one died in the U.S.) Your Peter has a ten year range in ages betw. 1881 and 1851 but the earlier is certainly closer to Hugh's age... :D

Good luck...let us know what you find!
