1841 or 1851 census lookup please
« on: Monday 23 October 06 01:05 BST (UK) »
Can anyone find my 4g grandmother, Margaret BURTON or ERSKINE (nee Murray), in 1841 or 1851, most likely in Alloa?

From her death certificate in Alloa in 1859 she was aged 88 years, thus born ca 1771. Unfortunately the certificate doesn't give either of her husbands' name - I'm hoping one of  them at least was still alive in 1841 or 1851.

I don't know of any children except for my 3g grandmother Elizabeth Erskine who married John Henderson in 1827 in Alloa.

Many thanks
Jan

Hi Jan

There is a Margaret Burton, age 60 (born anytime between 1777-81), living at Kirk Gate, Alloa. Also in the household is a Martin Burton, age also 60-64 and a Labourer, and a Mancy (spl?) Burton, age 20-24. All three show as being born in the County.

Regards.

This looks like a possibility for Martin and Margaret Murray's marriage, an actual extract on IGI:

MARGARET MURRAY  Marriages: Spouse: MARTIN HALLIBURTON
Marriage:  24 JAN 1812  Alloa, Clackmannan, Scotland

The birth of Catherine Stirling Burton would fit as their first child following their marriage.

There is one possibility for Margaret's first marriage:

MARGARET MORRAY  Marriages: Spouse: JOHN ERSKINE
Marriage:  11 MAR 1796  Clackmannan, Clackmannan, Scotland

Not sure if these are connected, but there are 3 children showing to couple with these names:

1. ALISON ERSKINE  Birth: 27 DEC 1800/ Christening: 29 JAN 1801 Tulliallan, Perth, Scotland
2. ALISON ERSKINE Birth: 04 SEP 1802/ Christening: 22 SEP 1802 Tulliallan, Perth, Scotland
3. MARGARET ERSKINE Birth: 24 AUG 1797/ Christening: 06 OCT 1797 Tulliallan, Perth, Scotland

Have you managed to find daughter Elizabeth Erskine's death cert.? This should confirm her father's name hopefully.

Regards.

Wow! Thanks Monica, that's fantastic! Margaret Burton died at Kirkgate in 1859 so that fits :-) She was the daughter of John Murray and Alison Reid so there's a good chance the children you found in Tulliallan are hers, following the naming pattern.

How did you find their marriage? I never would have thought of looking for Halliburton. That really narrows down the time frame for John Erskine's death.

I do have Elizabeth Erskine's death cert - her father was John Erskine, ploughman. She was married to John Henderson and living in Kirkgate in 1841 so that fits too. She was 56 when she died, making a birth date ca 1805 which means I can look for John Erskine's death between 1805 and 1812. :-)

A whole new branch of the family to find!!

Regards
