Losing hope of finding BASSHAM
« on: Tuesday 24 October 06 14:01 BST (UK) »
I'm still trying to track down my Mum's Grandma (!)

She was called Isabella BASSHAM and was born in 1898 (York Creed Reg)
She had a son in 1926 in York but gave her address as a caravan in Hull.
She gives her occupation as Servant and her status as single.

I have nothing else on this lady, but would really like to find out who she was.

I've looked on the BMD and found a Sarah BASSHAM (1898 Lanchester) and Ellen Eliza BASSHAM (1897 Wandsworth)

There is a gossipy story in my home town that she may have been a servant working for one of the "big" families in the town (Gainsborough) - especially as the boy (James) was adopted by a fairly well-to-do childless couple in 1927.

If anyone can help, or give me any clues as to where I could look for this - I'm really beginning to think I'll never find anything on this one.

Thanks in advance for anything you can do / help me with.

Presumably you've tried the 1901 census.  If she was from a travelling family she might have escaped that, but you could round up all the Basshams you can find on there for possible relatives.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

Sutton,

That might be useful - I'll do that.

However, I've not managed to find her birth either, and the prospect of searching for her death is a bit daunting, since all I know is that it would be after 1926...
If it comes to that though, it may be the way.

I wonder, can I find Hull / Gainsborough workhouse records too...

Thanks - I hope that the freedom of information act does overturn the 100 years rule on the 1911 census, I might find her on that!

Hi hcoldron

I was just wondering how you know she was born 1898 (York Creed Reg) if you haven't found her birth?

Cheers

AMBLY,

well - I knew that my Grandfather was born in York in 1927 in the workhouse (birth cert) and she is listed on the birth cert (no father :( )
Anyway, I looked up in the letters [of the poor house] and there was a letter about her arrival.
So I looked in the creed registers, which list the person who is coming in to the work house, their occupation, friends, previous address, religion, and DOB.

I assumed that she gave the correct name and DOB and so had a look on FreeBMD for births of BASSHAM (and variants) in 1898 +/- 2 years, then 5 years - I've only found one Isabella BASSHAM and she's much too old to be the same one (by 20 years or so)

does that make sense?

there is an Isabella Bassham birth registered in apr-jun qtr 1885
Lanchester (1875-38), durham. 10a 306
Do you think this could be her by any chance?
I know its still older than you were looking for but its a possibility.

I think that this one is too old, and I'm expecting her to be in the Hull area (although if she is from a travelling family...)

I couldn't view the Gainsborough Poor House records as 1926 is still classified.  :(

All Births are free to search on ancestry.co.uk   Choose the full version not the FreeBMD one    Try various spellings too Basham, Bassam etc   That might help you find her on the 1901 census too.
Good luck
