Where are records for Sewardstone, Essex?
« on: Wednesday 25 October 06 04:06 BST (UK) »
Ann Sales is listed in the 1851 census as having been born in Sewardstone, Essex. But I can't find any records for Sewardstone. Would they be included in Epping?

In the 1841, there are 2 lasses of that name

1 born 1832 Chingford / Epping area - so I guess this is the one you are referring to

The other 1834, West Ham area - so might be Leytonstone, but I'm not sure it was called that back then.

I live in Essex and have never heard of Sewardstone either.
I would guess it is a mis-transcription of something else.

what else do you know about Ann? I'm sure we can find her birth by other means!
What censusues do you have her on? When approx was she born? Is Sales her maiden or married name? etc
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Hallo, There is  a place called Sewardstone. If you go to the Streetmap website and search for a street called 'Sewardstone' you will see where it is in London E4 (part of Chingford).* I don't think it was ever more than a hamlet. I had a look at the website for Essex RO and got the impression that it was either a part of the parish of Waltham Holy Cross or Nazing or Chingford.
Maybe someone can add to that?

*North of Chingford and west of Loughton

I found the info on Ann in the census records: in the 1851 census, she is a servant in London, but states she was born in Sewardstone, Essex. Same in the 1871 and 1881 censuses. I don't know how trained the census takers were, but presumably three of them wouldn't have put down a place that didn't exist.  But now I have some alternative places to try -- Sales doesn't seem to be a very pouplar surname on those parts. Thanks everyone
