I'm still thinking that the most likely place to find James is Scottish Borders - maybe Edinburgh.

If he was about 27 when he married, he must have had some apprenticeship by then    hope you can find some records of those.

                                        forgot to tell you I,m from the hunter clan and when I moved to berwick 7 mths ago decided to do the family tree and found the gunn,s played a big part ,according to my brother james gunn crossed the borders from the isle of arran I,d ask my mother but she,s 95 and her minds gone so I dont know how true it is .the hunter tree goes as far as 1778 dead stop. but I,m more interested in the gunn side love scotland must be in my genes ,I,ll try and find apprenticeships for stone masons I,ll be back.
