POLAND: Rytel - Nagorski
« on: Saturday 28 October 06 00:31 BST (UK) »
My grandfather immigrated to the Uk with his brother after WWII.

He moved to Lancaster Lancashire and retained his Polish Citizenship (and passport). His name was Leon Nagorksi.

His brother became a british citizen and changed his name to Tony North (not sure what his previous forename was).

My grandfather was born in Rytel Poland 8th July 1923 - he had two other brother who stayed in Poland.

As my grandfather died September 2003, i dont have any other details to search from, and as i dont speak or read polish - this is going to be a bit of a struggle. Dont know what his parents were called or where they were married etc.

Any help, anybody could give me would be greatly recieved. I have managed to research my grandmother's family back to the 1760's - so not a complete novice - but not sure where to start with this one.

Thanks

Theresa

Hi Theresa,

Welcome to RootsChat  :) :)

if your grandfather's brother became a british citizen, then it's worth looking for his naturalisation papers,as these may give some details about the rest of the family.

check out
Topic: RootsChat Topics - Naturalisation and Internment
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,157691.0.html

for some tips on where, and how, and what might be found.

Good luck,
Bob

ps.
just checked the catalogue and found this
Nagorsky, Marks (or M. Myers), from Russia. Resident in London. Certificate 14787 issued 21 May 1927.

From Marks (Marcus) to (Marc) Anthony =  Tony   ??? ???  ;D

Thanks for this. Have just found out today - he didnt arrive in the usual way!

He was brought here by America Forces in about 1944/45 after he was discharged as wounded from the Polish Free Army (he had previously escaped from a German Work Camp and and Russian Camp). He was brought accross from Italy.

He was brought to either Cartmel/Cark area or Barrow area of the UK. His brother naturalised in the 1960's to make things easier for his children.

My grandfather came without passport or paper swhich took until nearly 1969 to sort out so he could travel back to Poland.

His mother's family name was Lenska.

Will keep looking and check out the link - thanks

Theresa

Hi,

The Polish for Tony is Antoni.

Re: Lenska.
This might not mean much. I think actress Rula Lenska is from Krakow. Sometimes names and places go together.

It is Renska or Kenska - had to read from the birth certificate. They lived near Cojnice - Poland

sorry

When the page comes up press the English version, on the right hand side.
Then look in the green area at the top for Parish Churches.
