Which parish should I try next?
« on: Saturday 28 October 06 01:40 BST (UK) »
Any bright ideas as to which parish I should try next in the search for my missing William Ratcliff(e) please.

I know that he married in 1827 in St Laurence, Ramsgate to a Jane Kirby. Janes family came from St Peters, Broadstairs area although they were of the  parish of St Laurence at the time of marriage.

I think William was possibly born in St Laurence or St Peters in either 1809 or 1796 respectively (there are 2 possibles) but there don't appear to be any other Ratcliff(e)s in the area earlier, no baptism's, marriages nor any burials.

I think therefore that the family may have originally come from a nearby parish but don't know which ones abut these two.

Can anyone suggest where I should try next?

Thank you
Jackie :D

Hi Jackie,

My understanding is that St. Laurence and Ramsgate were two separate parishes back then?  The main sub district being Ramsgate in the District of Thanet.  They are now one since 1922 and 1935 depending on what section of St. Laurence you are referring to.  If I am correct, I would first check the database you have already searched and make sure you are looking at the one that includes St. Laurence and is not just the Ramsgate database.

If that doesn't solve the problem, the surrounding Parishes were Margate and Minster.  Margate is North West of St. Laurence, west of Broadstairs and Minster is to the West of St. Laurence.

I hope that is of some assistance.

Hi Jackie,

Glad I could help.  The other thing to note is that I have seen RATCLIFFE noted as RADCLIFFE.  Just a thought to keep your eyes open for variations.

Good Luck in your search,

I think ASH nr Sandwich. There is an 1830's petition with a John Ratcliffe, William Ratcliffe and a Stephen Ratcliff listed. There are also Ratcliffes buried here in Worth.

If you'd like a copy of petition let me know and I'll email it to you.

I think you may be mixing up Parishes with Registration Districts.  St Lawrence is the Parish Church for Ramsgate; Thanet is the Registration District covering Ramsgate.
