Please can anyone read the occupation of William Broadbent - on RG10/4402
-66 St Stephen Street, Skircoat, 1871 Census.   Tried to attach a photo of the page but couldnt do it!!! (something about the file being too big).

The writing on the page is quite clear but having real trouble making something sensible from it ???

The best that I can make out is Geuappe Singer but think that is wrong!

Attached the occupation.

I suspect that the "W" denotes a woollen industry trade - the 1861 bears this out as he is a worsted weaver.

Still looks like geraffe singer to me though...

If you look at your man on the 1881 census he is a nightwatchman (out of employ) BUT further down the page is a man who is a "Worsted Genappe singeer".

The nappe of a fabric is the 'pile' I think, so this definitely looks like a worsted related occupation.  Maybe the nappe had to be singed (as in burnt)?

Will try googling worsted trades...

One of the areas that worsted originated was Belgium and there is a Belgian town called Genappe...

The French word 'nappe' means cloth and 'singer' means imitation or mock.  Maybe this was a new technique that had come over from mainland Europe?
