"bears carter" or am i misreading the writing?
« on: Sunday 29 October 06 12:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi this is from the marriage certificate of my great grandmother and was the occupation of her father. It seems to read "bears carter". Any ideas?

Hi Gareth

The a in bears doesn't look like the a in carter.  Could it be a C?

Doesn't give any clue to what the word is though.   ???

Looks like Brass to me - never heard of a brass carter, but have had a brass cutter in my tree.

agree - the 'e' in each word is so different, so an 'r' makes sense .... and cutter would be better ..  ;)

But then you've got a U which clearly looks like an a and two t's that are completely different.

Brass carter gets my vote. Perhaps it should have been brass cutter, but that's another matter ....

Can you find the family on a census?  Have you got gtgrandma's birth certificate with his occupation ;  might have changed though.
