Derby County Prison (1871 St Werburgh)

Quite interested to find a relie in the County Prison (I've long since accepted it's gonna be 'Ag Lab' / 'Imbecile' recent discovery or now 'Ex Con!!'
Prison Ref: 1871 Census RG 10 3576 Folio 65 page 8. 
So if your wondering where someone was........

Seriously though could anyone advise me as to whether there may be records for the 'Inmates' with possible details of why they were there . 

Does it still exist??? as a place of historical interest that is??

Derbyshire Records Office in Matlock is sure to have the answer, and possibly some records. I went recently to look at the Asylum records!

I have to say these strange discoveries I've made are only connected by marriage  . 

The really interesting ones in my lot I've just found didn't bother with the ceremony - just change surnames to make it more diff. for my searches

All that remains of the prison is its facade -however if you go to www.derbyshire-peakdistrict.co.uk
Heritage walk 1 in Derby there is a photograph of what is left.

The prison governors house still exists but is not open to the public.

Have been to Derby RO and found 'Calendar of Prisoners' (thank you to the RO staff) with details of the General Quarter Sessions at Derby.
Details were Name/Offence/Judgement
Fascinating to handle documents from 1868 - lots of names, I was able to confirm my link via 1871 Census which gave details of place of birth.  Didn't look at them all and happened to pick the right one straight away

Mine was tried for "Larceny & Possession" which was the most common offence and got 3 years

Fantastic! Just found one of my ancestors in Derby Prison for assault in 1850 - though I doubt he enjoyed it quite so much.  well done to whoever transcribed all of that.

Fascinating reading. In 1816 you have Anthony Ligard - executed for Murder and the last man Gibbeted in Derbyshire. in 1817 you have the Pentritch revolutionaries. You also have three men executed for setting fire to hay bales.
