« on: Monday 30 October 06 21:20 GMT (UK) »
Where do I start, I know that my grandfather William Dunne born around 1870   whose mothers name was Smyth came from Carrickmacross and worked as a groom in the local gentry estate. So where do I go from here to find eveidence. Please help

Hi celtic_hobo,

What denomination were the Dunnes and Smyths?

Thanks to the From Ireland website of Dr Jane Lyons of Dublin you can click here to read a description of Carrickmacross from Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of Ireland, 1837. I'm not certain if the estate where William worked is mentioned. It's likely that he attended Church in the area. If the estate was a large one there may be records for that estate.

The Carrickmacross website contains the names of the Churches http://tiny.cc/2OtZa broken link

Click for an article about the Shirley estate, dignitaries of Co. Monaghan listed in Thom's Irish Almanac and Official Directory for the Year 1862 and pictures of Magheross Church
