Marriage bonds - National Library of Wales
« on: Wednesday 01 November 06 16:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Do any of you have access to the marriage bonds in the National Library of Wales?

I'm looking for details of the marriage licence for the marriage of William Lewis and Jane Jones 8th August 1831 in Whitchurch.

I already have a copy of the marriage entry from Glamorgan Records Office but it didn't have the clues I was hoping for.

Glamorgan Records Office have told me that the NLW have the marriage bonds which may hold additional information about Williams and Janes parents etc.

Reference to Jane Jones and William Lewis's  marriage found in NLW Marriage Bonds, Llandaff Diocese, Females, pre 1700-1837.
The code A.128/107 appears by the entry.

I'd be very grateful if someone could look it up for me.

Thanks in advance
Bryan.

I apologise for the double post, I got a network error when posting and it advised me to refresh so I did and it appears to have sent it twice.
Sorry.

Hi Bryan, just for information, had a look and you can search for info on marriage bonds at NLW hopefully at this link.  Click marriage bond database.

http://www.llgc.org.uk:81/

The ref you gave is there, but unfortunately, this is only an info link to your people, you cannot actually view the bond online, I think this has to be done by a person or by paying a researcher, which they can provide, if needed.

I have also found if you type a surname in the search box, it allows records for different areas (Wales) with that name to come up so hopefully this can help all researchers find info if married by licence/bond from 1801 - 1837)

Hi Bryan

I've managed to get marriage bonds in two separate ways from the Nat Library after getting the reference, which I think you must have:

1. You can ask the Nat Lib to do you a photocopy. They will send you a declaration to sign and an invoice. Once they have received this, they will photocopy and send to you.

2. If you have a friend/relative with a Nat Lib ticket and who lives close by (I have a friend and cousin), you could persuade them to get it for you. They'll still have to pay the photocopying charges but it's quicker.

Cheers Cas/Gadget,

I'll drop them a line and ask them to send me the photocopy.

Cas, the marriage entry had Joseph Jones and Edmund and Sarah Lewis as witnesses but didn't say if they were related or not.
I suspect that Joseph is Jane's father and that Edmund and Sarah were Williams brother and sister but Edmund could also have been his father.
The only other link I could glean from the marriage entry was a witness called Thomas James who seems to have been working for Rachel according to the 1841 census but it's a very tenuous link.

Hopefully the license/bond will have more details on it.

cheers,
Bryan

Hi Gadget,

Thanks for that  :)

I'll email them straight away.

I think I'm getting too impatient for this family history stuff  ;D
I was alright for the first year or so but now I've got to the point where I need to send off for things and I keep rushing to the postbox every evening when I get in hoping some more evidence has arrived in the post  ;D

I also keep popping in and out of here when I can.
It's a great site isn't it?

Cheers,
Bryan.

It's a great site, Bryan, but my problem is that I've become addicted and I pop out very rarely (get a life Gadget  ::) ::) ::) )

The Nat Library requests  take a while so even impatient me had to wait. Basically once you've e-mailed they will come back to you with an approx price and ask for your address. They will then send you an estimate and various privacy forms to sign. Once you have replied with your cheques, they will send you the photcopy.

The whole process can take 4 weeks or so, but it's faster than writing to them.

Don't hold your breath  :o

Also, I noticed that you were hoping to get info about parents. It is possible that you'll get the father's name, particularly if they were under age, but I haven't yet had one that lists the mother's name. They are rather lovely documents though - A3 with seals and signatures, etc.

I've sent them an email.

I'll just have to start going sideways with my tree for a bit until I get the information back (that should take my mind off it for a bit).
I've plenty of other links to investigate as I've been concentrating on tracing my fathers line back as far as I can but I seem to have hit a bit of a brick wall.
Might be a good time for me to start on my mothers side  :)
(or start filling in details of cousins and uncles etc, it might even throw up a few more clues if I'm lucky).

Thanks for the info  :)
Bryan.
