Advice please - new to searching in Ireland
« on: Friday 12 November 04 08:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi Rootschatters

I've been searching industriously in England, and am now wanting to venture into another part of the family in Ireland.  If anyone can advise this Aussie, I'll be very grateful!  I have read that Irish censuses largely don't exist for the 19th century.

I am looking for siblings of my g-grandfather, Edmund Huband Smith (later hyphenated).  He was born 1837, apparently in Co Tyrone, though his father, Joseph Huband Smith, was a Dubliner.  As a young man, Joseph lived at 1 Fitzwilliam St North, Dublin.  He married Catherine Cecilia Jephson in 1835 and then seemed to have lived at 2 Holles St, Dublin - he was a barrister.

There may have been a family connection to the church of St Nicholas Without in Dublin.

We think one sibling may have been called Jephson Huband Smith and possibly another Josephine Huband Smith, but do not know for sure.

I would also like to find out death details for Joseph (who we believe died c. 1882) and his wife Catherine.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to find this information, please?  It is hard, from this side of the world!

Hello MarieC,

Have you searched for them in the Griffith Valuation? This was taken in Dublin between 1848 and 1851 . Would they be there then? There are some links to online Dublin directories on my website I would recommend too.

Thanks KateD and Ticker,

I'd never heard of the Griffith valuation.  On googling it, I haven't really found anything that looks helpful - which is often my experience with websites!  However, I have posted on a Dublin message board, sent off a research assessment request, and will continue to investigate the sites you mention.

Seems to be the same old problem though.  Unless one can get to libraries or record offices (impossible from Australia), one can't really search for anyone.

If he was a barrister, do you think he admitted to the Kings Inn in Dublin? There is a great book with genelogical details on all admitted, father's name etc.

You can check Dublin addresses and occupations in the annual Thoms directories.
There's an online 1850 Shaws that shows him in 2 Holles St barrister easter term 1828.

Kate

Thanks for that!  I had a look at the site you mentioned.

I did find him mentioned in an online Thom's Irish Almanac and official directory for 1864 - living in Howth.  Excuse my ignorance please, but can someone tell me what is Howth?  Is it a village in Co Dublin, or what?

Kate, I do think he may have been admitted to Kings Inn.  Do you have details of the book you mentioned?  If I can get to the Queensland State Library in Brisbane, the family history unit just may have the book.

By the way, I was able to send off for a free research assessment - received a very prompt reply, but have been quoted over $300 Australian.  A lot of money!  Before I think about spending that, I would like to keep trying other things.

Still open to any good tips!

Hi Marie,

Howth is on the sea in North county Dublin.

The book is called Kings Inn Admission papers 1607 - 1867 Irish Manuscripts Commission 1982

how much is $300 australian in Euro/sterling or dollars?

Thanks for that, Kate,

I'll keep an eye open for that book.

You are asking me to do maths!! not my strong point.  $300 Australian would be roughly 120 pounds sterling.  I have no idea what it is in euros!

A bit much for my budget at present.
