Hay-McCleod
« on: Friday 03 November 06 06:02 GMT (UK) »
Hello
My grandmother's family were Hay-McLeod's. David Hay-McLeod was born on 2 June 1850..I think In Dundee.
Is anybody able to find details about this family and confirm this place of birth? I know nothing about his parents or siblings. I am yet to discover his date of emigration to Australia, though perhaps it was from Dundee.

Cheers

Greg

Hi Greg

There are no David McLeods aged 0-1 showing in Angus in the 1851 Census. There are 6 in total in Scotland:1 in Glasgow, 2 in Ross & Cromarty, 1 in Sutherland, I in Edinburgh and 1 in Inverness.

It might help your searches, if you haven't already got them, to try and get his death cert and marrriage (I assume he married over there) to at least try to obtain some personal details to help you with the searches. Otherwise, you will have no way of verifying you have the correct David and family.

There's nothing showing on IGI for births with Hay as a middle name (although for births if registered, the middle name is not always given).

I have also looked at births and census entries in Angus 1850 +/- 3 years and nothing is showing.

Regards.

Hello Monica
I hope you can still help me. I have the marriage certificate of David McLeod who I discover was born in Coupar Angus Farfarshire 2/6/1850. His wife was Matilda Marshall who was born in Dundee, Forfarshire (date unknown).

His father was Norman and his mother was Mary Hay. They were married 8/7/1844, birth dates and places unknown.

Do you have information about these unknown dates and can you explain the Forfarshire/Angus naming of the region?

Cheers Greg

Hi Greg

Can't make out why David's entry on Scotlands People for 1851 Census is not showing, given that it shows on the new index for 1851 from another site:

Norman McLeod    42, Hand Loom Weaver Linen, b. Perth, Perthshire
Mary McLeod    37, b. Longforgan, Perthshire
James McLeod    16, lodger, Hand Loom Weaver Linen, b. Dundee, Forfarshire
Jean McLeod    8, daughter, b. CO Angus, Perthshire
John McLeod    5, son, b. CO Angus, Perthshire
David McLeod    10 Months, b. CO Angus, Perthshire
David Burnet    15, Hand Loom App, lodger, b. Dundee
Thomas Hay    17, Laborer Waulk Mill, lodger, b. Kmaid, Perthshire

Address:  Precinct, Coupar Angus

I'll have a look for the family in 1861.

Regards.

Monica

Forfarshire and Angus are the same county. It changed from Forfar to Angus, at some point (not sure of the dates) and became known as Angus....I'm sure someone here will have a more detailed explanation  ;)

Can't see any Matilda Marshall (sounds Australian already!) born in Dundee in the 1861 Census. Did they marry in Australia? There are 3 Matildas born between 1842-60 on the 1861 Census. Two born in Ireland and one in Glasgow. Her family could have left for Australia before the 1861 Census.

Do you have any more info on her: age, either parents' name?

Regards.

These are the other children's IGI entries. As you can see, some show both surnames. This would normally mean that the couple were unmarried, but the father attended the registration of the child's birth and agreed to his name being used on the birth certificate.

1. DANIEL MARSHALL  Birth: 20 JUN 1870 Dundee, Angus, Scotland
2. ANN MARSHALL Birth: 30 JUL 1867 Dundee, Angus, Scotland
3. JESSIE MARSHAL OR WALKER Birth: 27 MAY 1862 Dundee, Angus, Scotland
4. CHRISTINA RAMSAY MARSHALL Birth: 21 JUL 1872 Dundee, Angus, Scotland
5. MARY STEWART MARSHALL OR WALKER Birth: 23 APR 1865 Dundee, Angus, Scotland

Just checked Scotlands People, the official BMD site post 1855. There is no marriage entry showing for Daniel and Jessie.......I wonder if they lived just as man and wife and never quite got round to making it official.......... ;)

Monica

Greg, you will need to verify Matilda's parents from some other source to make sure that this is her family. Does it not show her parents' names on the MC (or  Death Cert) in Australia.
