I think the only way is to get his birth cert.

I would write to the relevant reg office and quote the possibles with fathers name and occ. with a cheque and your phone number.

I had 4 possibles for marriage William Jones - Elizabeth Davies.  The only way I was able to get the right cert was writing to the reg office quoting what I knew.  They rang me to see if I was happy with what they found before sending me the cert.

Good luck

Thank you I didn't realise I could give them possibles. I always thought I had to have the right information.  I will do that

That info is really good to know. Now I might just get somewhere with others that I am stuck on.

You are a star.

Hi,
May I offer my twopenneth?  As Corwen is so close to Bala, it would make sense to marry there. The Jones Roberts could also be the old naming system, where each child in the household could have a surname made up of at least two surnames, in different order!  Sorry to add to the confusion.

Thanks Titch,

Would that be a combination of mother and fathers surnames?

Hi Blueboy,

Yes, I've seen that in some families.

Here is an interesting website:

Hi BLue,  :)

Just to add, I do quite a lot of Welsh research for myself and  others, and it seems less likely in late 1860/70's that 'ap' (son of) would be in use by your people.

Pre 1800 it was quite common and I have evidence of it in my own tree.

1. I think it much more likely that Jones is to related his mothers maiden name.

2. There is also the possibility that he was registered as a Jones out of wedlock and took the name Roberts when his mother married?

If you can find refs for the 1st I would still go ahead and try and get his cert.  If you cannot find him consider the second.

Registry offices normally handwrite the cert, I have been told you can request a photocopy of the original if you wish, just to let you know.

hope this helps, good luck, let us know how you get on.

Cas   ;)
