Not Thompson it's Jamieson
« on: Sunday 05 November 06 00:19 GMT (UK) »
I discovered the Scottish connection was a Mary Jamieson born 1848 or 1852 in Kircudbright.  Family legend says it was the town.  She moved to England at some point  and married a Stephen Thompson in Lancaster in 1872. I suspect she may have been in service in the area.  Anyone know anything about Jamiesons in Kircudbright?

The IGI has a christening for a Mary in 1848   New Abbey, Kirkcudbright ( it's the county)...and a Mary Jane in 1851 Kirkmabreck, Kirkcudbright...( parents listed on site...http://www.familysearch.org
Were there any parents listed on the marriage cert?   J.J.

Haven't got the marriage certificate yet as I've just got her sons and got this far.  It would be amazing if she is from Kirkmabreck as I lived there a number of years.

Hi Duckweed

Have you got the names of her children? These might give you a way of discovering which one she was as there was still a tendency to use some form of the Scottish naming pattern when Kirkcudbrightans left 'home'. Mine did.

The marriage cert will, of course, confirm her father's name though.

Once you have confirmed at least father's name, have a look at www.dumgal.gov.uk/historicalindexes/census.aspx for the 1851 Census. the Mary Jamieson born in New Abbey is there with family. The Mary born in Kirkmabreck was born after the Census that year so won't show there but her parents and daughter Agnes are there in Kirkmabreck.

Regards.

The parents names were James and Janet and Martin and Jess(?ie), so the children's names do not seem to relate  :-\

What age does she give on the English censuses?

Someone gave me a link to the parish she and Stephen lived in.  There is a copy of the banns.  Her father's name is given as William and occupation as Shepherd.  He seems to be alive in 1871 but has died by 1884 the time of her second marriage.

Well that's a lead for us to go one  :)

Have you checked for a William Jamieson on the Free to view  1851 Census, that Monica gave the link to:

www.dumgal.gov.uk/historicalindexes/census.aspx

You might find a William, shepherd with a family that fits.
