Hi Trish and Monica

Thanks for all the help. With your encouragement I've now found the death of James's father (Charles McInnes) and looked at the result of the search. Result - the name of his wife is confirmed, I now know the names of his father and his mother (+ maiden name) and I also know Charles's father's occupation. I'll now go on IGI and see what else I can find. I've also found other members of the family thanks to reading how to optimise a search on Scotlandspeople and not use too many credits at once!

regards, Fairlane

Just great Fairlane - Scotland death certificates can be very helpful - I hope you can find a family member born/died or married in 1855 - that year had even more information  :)  :)

Good luck with the parish records as well

Trish

Update for Monica and Trish!

As someone who likes to know how things turn out I thought you'd be interested. Today I received my marriage extract - the records office is facing unprecedented demand at the moment -
"Charles McInnes and Jean Robertson both of this parish" !!

Thanks again for your help - I am finding my way round Scotland's records and making progress slowly. An 1856 marriage has given lots of excellent info.

Hi Fairlane

Tis always nice to hear how searches are proceeding. What you really need to find is a family member in Scotland who was born, married or died in 1855. This was the first year of civil registrations and the certificates contain an excess of information :)  I gather they found it all too hard & cut back in the following years on the data collected.  :(

Christmas wishes  :)   :)

Trish

PS When you are looking for OPR (pre 1855) records, always try the IGI. If the parents are mentioned on a marriage, the IGI often transcribes this on the mariage record
