GRIFFITHS - Tredegar
« on: Friday 12 November 04 22:01 GMT (UK) »
My ancestor Richard Griffiths was born at Queens Square, in 1861.  However, I am at present unable to find anything of his father Thomas who was recorded as a blacksmith, or Thomas's marriage to the mother Margaret Morgan. They had previously had a daughter Catherine, but I am unable to find any record of marriage. I presume they were married as Margaret subsequently married Henry James in 1869 and her name was given as Griffiths. Any suggestions of how I may precede would be appreciated.

Thank you,

c w

Hello CW.
Regarding the marriage of thomas and margaret i can only suggest that you search 1837 online.

The Gwent FHS census index for 1861 has the following
griffiths

BEDWELTY 1861 RG9  3999 50 10
UCHLAWRCOED TREDEGAR
GRIFFITHS thomas       30
                  margaret    21
                  catherine      3
                   hannah        1

There are several other griffiths on the same folio who may be family or unconnected

The 1871 bedwellty census has margaret married to
henry james with the 61 children plus richard.

If you require details of the 1871 census return
please ask

thank you Rhys, afraid to assume too much but the details you give seem to match the details I have. The ages for both Margaret and Catherine seem to match, although I have not come across any ref. to Hannah. It would be great if you were able to give me details of the 1871 census if that is not too much to ask. I am still new to all this computer stuff- but thanks so much for your help.

I hope this is not taken as being too cheeky :-[
but would it be possible to again lookup the 1861 info of Thomas Griffiths in order to find his given place of birth.
I have been unable to locate him any further back due to the abundance of people with the same name, and my inability to locate his marriage.
The ref. given to me by Rhys is
BEDWELTY1861 RG9 3999 50 10
UCHLAWRCOED TREDEGAR
Thomas Griffiths  30

Thanks
Caroline :)

Well Pritch, what can I say,
Thank You so much.
Your kindness is greatly appreciated -

By the birth of their son in July of the same year,
Thomas was calling himself a blacksmith ???

You have given me a few more leads with the others at the same residence

again thanks,
Caroline :)
