Whoa....Thanks guys...didn't expect all this info...but I'm getting a 'bit' lost now ???

I'm gonna try and recap if you don't mind!

Thomas Farrant b 1820...married Eliza Eligum (Elligham) in 1863....they had 5 children..JAMES, John. George, Caroline and Charles...

Thomas (b 1820) parents were:

George and Elizabeth...they had 5 children...Charlotte, Charles, Ann, THOMAS and James...

Now how do I find out about George..DOB etc...According to 'suepip' I know he was 55 at time of 1841 census, so born c 1786....but I can't find him on family search, only a marriage for a George Farrant in Haverhill!

Thanks in advance.... ;)

Steve
Kris..is your above post relevant to me now.. ???

Steve

Once we get going on the info its very hard to stop, we look on it as a challenge.

As regards finding Georges baptism, if you can't find it on the IGI then it will probably have to be parish registers.

Hi Steve

I'm afraid that births only began to be recorded after the advent of civil registration in 1837.  Prior to this you would need to refer to Parish Registers for a baptism.

Most of Suffolk's Anglican records are available for sale at the SRO and lookups from many can be obtained from kind volunteers here and at The Suffolk Surname List.

http://www.suffolk-surnames-list.co.uk/

An age disparity of +/- 5 years is very common on census returns, so I would worry about this.  The references you have given are what is needed to find the census entry.  In this case the 1881 - RG11/1824 Folio 134 Page 11.

To avoid long confusing threads, it is always best to start a new post for a new query.

Rick :)

Hi Steve,

Will try to clarify for your recap. Thomas the son of George and Elizabeth baptised 1820 married Phoebe CLARKE. They were the parents of the five children (JAMES, John. George, Caroline and Charles) Phoebe died in 1858 and Thomas then married Elizabeth Ellingham in 1863.

The burials I gave are most certainly for you. They appear to be George (Father of Thomas baptised 1820) who died in 1854. Elizabeth the mother of Thomas appears to have died in 1856. Phoebe the first wife of Thomas and mother of James and his four siblings died in 1858. Thomas himself died in 1895. Finally the Charles who died in 1830 appears to be Thomas's elder brother.

As Rick has said from here you will need to start trying Parish Registers. I cannot see the marriage nor the baptism of George. In the 1841 census ages of adults were rounded down in 5 year lots therefore George listing as aged 55  may well have given his age as anything between 55 and 59. In 1851 he lists as aged 71 and 1854 death lists him as aged 74 therefore a baptism around 1780 seems likely. The only ref to a place of birth is the 1851 which lists a birth in Stoke, Elizabeth lists as born in what looks like Hunion/Hunson to me - I suspect Hundon which is in Risbridge and quite near to Stoke by Clare, Though there is also a Hunston in Suffolk. You may find the marriage took place in the Brides Parish.....Good Luck.......Kris  :D
