Alfred and Margaret Lihou
« on: Friday 10 November 06 11:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I only came accross this site this morning and would like to say well done. This is my first message so I hope it's ok!
I am trying to find information which might possibly lead me to being able to buy a marriage certificate.

My couple are Alfred Lihou born about 1846 St Sampsons, Guernsey & Margaret, (maiden name unknown). Margaret was born about 1848 Cockley Cley, Swaffham Norfolk England. Margaret may have been living in Guernsey at the time of the 1871 Census but I am not sure because I don't have her maiden name, that's what I'm hoping to find on the marriage certificate, if it can be found!

The 1881 Census details are:

Alfred and Margaret Lihou
Mount Morin Road
St. Sampson
Guernsey.

Children:
Margaret E 1874
Alfred Nicholas 1876
Ellen 1877
Amy Blanch1879
All born in Guernsey. Ellen does not appear on the 1891 census, I would love to find out what happened to her.

On the 1891 Census it shows Alfred and Margaret living in Bristol England along with the children they had between 1881 and 1891 along with the ones listed above:
Their address was:
Bedminster
Bristol.

William Herbert 1883
George Clifford 1884
Lillian Sarah 1886 (My Grandmother)
Herbert Sydney 1889.
The 4 youngest all born in Bristol.

The 1891 Census shows them still living in Bristol with William, Lillian and Herbert.

I would love any information on them. I have birth certificates for the children born in Bristol but none for the children born in Guernsey.

Hoping someone can help me!

Kathryn.

Hi Kathryn,

Welcome to RootsChat  :)  :)

Don't the birth certs give Margaret's maiden name?

The only Margaret born ca. 1848 in Cockley Cley that I can see on pre-marriage census returns is  Margaret Prick... She's in Cockley Cley in both 1851 and 1861 - parents William and Mary Ann.

Hi Tati
Thank you for replying.
Whoops, I don't have the actual certificates just the copies of the birth index pages, sorry for the misleading info!
How can I find out if the Margaret you mentioned is the same one who married Alfred. I'm hoping to eventually buy a copy of the marriage certificate.
Thank you once again.
Kathryn.

Well, unless someone has got access to Channel Island BMD and can look up the marriage straight away, one option is to get hold of one of those birth certs!

The cert will tell you Margaret's maiden name.

I see a Margaret Pryke born 'England', age 24, a servant at St Peter Port on the 1871 census...

I'm having trouble finding Alfred! He's a seaman in 1871, and in 1861 there's an Alfred Leo who could be him, a Boy secnd class at sea.

I was hoping to find him wih his family in 1851 but I'm drawing a blank so far  :-\

Hi Tati
I will order a copy of my Grandmothers certificate. My Grandmother was Alfred and Margarets daughter Lillian born in Bristol. I know we would have had hers at one time but I suspect its been lost a long time ago as she died in 1963.
I found a Alfred Lihou on the 1851 and 61 census but am unsure as to whether or not it is 'my' Alfred there is 6 years difference with the birth year!
Many thanks once again.
Kathryn.

Hi Tati
According to the 1881 census Alfred and Margaret were married and living in Guernsey. From 1891 onwards Alfred and Margaret are living with their family in Bristol.
I'm sure they were married in Guernsey, would you know how I could find someone who would be willing to look at the marriage records for me?
Kathryn

Sorry, I can't help with BMDs  :-\

What I wanted to say is that the Alfred who is 6 years out on the early census returns may not be yours, as there is an  Alfred Lihou born ca. 1840 still in Guernsey in 1891.

Thank you very much for that Tanja but my Alfred and Margaret are the ones living in Bristol in 1891, their daughter Lillian Sarah was my Grandmother, (my Dad's Mum).
Lillians brothers George and Alfred Nicholas and her sister Amy Blanch married and stayed in Bristol, I haven't found what happened to the others yet.
Thank you once again for your help.
