CASTLE families - Wickhambreaux
« on: Friday 10 November 06 14:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am researching my CASTLE ancestors from Wickhambreaux, and would appreciate if sks might be able to help me find some missing information, or perhaps even long lost rellies!!  ;D

I also have a list of Castle "strays" who were born in Wickhambreaux, from going through the IGI and Ancestry, but would very much appreciate (if at all possible) finding out who they belonged to and how they fit in. I know that this is a big ask, so appreciate any help.

Firstly, in the district lists that are given here on the Kent boards, Wickhambreaux is not listed, so i am wondering what areas are close to it that are listed, and would the records for those places include ones for Wickhambreaux?

Thanks to a very kind person quite a while ago, i have some of the information from the Wickhambreaux parish registers on my Castle's. I also have a little census info.

Brothers: Charles Castle was born 1806, STephen b 1809, and George 1800, and other siblings.
In each case their parents are only given as Castle and Mrs Castle.

However, there is a Thomas Castle b 1801 to a Thomas and Ann Castle, and also a John Castle b 1754 who married Mary Measeday b 1758 in June 1799, and later Ann ............ I believe John and Mary and John and Ann to be the parents of Charles, STephen and George and their siblings. (these are all Wickhambreaux) Ann was an 80 year old, presumably widow, living with Stephen and his family in the 1841 census, still in Wickhambraux.

??? Would someone be able to find out for me if possible, When Mary (Measeday) CAstle died, what Ann's maiden name was, and perhaps even when Ann died? And when her husband John b 1754 died?

Also, could the Thomas and Ann actually be John and Ann, as i think they had a son Thomas as well. or, is Thomas sr, John's brother? If he is John's brother, did he and his Ann have other children as well as Thomas?

STephen and wife Sarah nee Griggs, and Charles and wife Sarah ........ and their families emigrated from Kent to South Australia, one in 1853 and one in 1855. It appears that George stayed in England. I do not know what happened to any of the others.

I would like to find out the maiden name and parents of Charles' wife Sarah.

The Wickhambreux born Castle strays i have listed that i would like to find out where they belong, if anyone can help, are:
Henry b 1790
Edward b 1805
Sarah b 1818
Emily b 1828 m at St Marys Chislet to James Spratt. (where is Chislet?)
Eliza b 1829
Emma b 1829
Mary b 1830
Elizabeth b 1832
Eliza b 1840

Hoping someone will be able to help me put the rest of the puzzle together. Thanks for any assistance you may be able to provide.

cheers for now,
B

For civil registration purposes (since 1837) Wickhambreaux comes under the registration district of Bridge (near Canterbury).  Is that what you mean?

Hi Casalguidi,
Yes, that's part of what i wanted to know, and also which other places are nearby in the general area that Wickhambreaux is.

Is Wickhambreaux itself still there, or has its name changed? In addition to the change in register district I mean.
Thank you for answering and even letting me know that Canterbury is nearby.
Cheers for now,
Barb

Hi Barb

Wickhambreaux (a village) is still there
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0wl/

It is number 282 on section 3 of the Kent parish map on the following page

http://www.kfhs.org.uk/kfhs-area1.htm

If you juggle about with the links on the page, you will be able to get the names of neighbouring parishes by looking up the numbers.

You can find a number of references to Wickhambreaux just by typing the name into your usual search engine ie.

Hi Barb,

Wickhambreaux is very close to where I live - the villages that surround it are;

Fordwich, Stodmarsh, Littlebourne, Ickham, Wingham and Preston.

Chislet is a few miles to the North, the other side of the (now) A28.

Let me know if you need any local detective work, graveyards, pictures etc.

No CASTLEs listed on any of the indexed graveyards in the area...

Hi Matt and Casalguidi,   :)
Thank you for the links which i have had a great time following up. I did find some Castles buried in various churchyards on the MI Kent archeology site Matt, and a couple of the names are the same as some I am chasing, so thank you very much for that. So perhaps they moved away from Wickhambreaux after their marriages. Will follow them up further later. Also thank you for the offer of local detective work.

Wickhambreaux looks like a lovely little place, and the photos of both the Wickhambreaux and Chislet churches look amazing. Love old churches.

Do you happen to have access to parish registers for the areas close by? I am wondering if there is a record of a Sarah Griggs marrying either a George, Charles or Stephen Castle from Wickhambreaux, in the 1820's.

Two of the brothers married Sarah's, (one of them married Sarah Griggs, but do not know the other Sarah's maiden name.) Had believed that it was Charles and Stephen, but a very recently obtained death record of one of their daughters (out here) gave George Castle and Sarah Griggs as her parents, so now am very confused as i had found no record of a George and Sarah, only a George and Harriet. (in the censuses, and too early for freebmd, and not on IGI)   ???

One of the known Sarah's came from Stodmarsh (which is on your list of nearby villages), and the other came from St Nicholas Wade. (As that wasn't on your list, i guess that is rather further away.) I am in the process of trying to find the places on the map of Kent that Casalguidi suggested - i think new glasses may help here!!!  ;D

Thank you both very much, once again.
cheers for now,
Barb

St Nicholas at Wade is a few villages over to the East, past Upstreet and Sarre. It's pretty much right at the edge of Thanet, next village over being Birchington.

Hi Barb

There is now an OPC for Wickhambreaux who is offering lookups for baptisms, marriages and burials in the parish registers though no dates are mentioned.
